CryptoIRC is an enhanced, unofficial, unencrypted chat client for the IRC network. It features a text window to receive messages, and the goal was to provide a full encrypted client for secure public, private or secret chat. This is achieved with the usage of the OpenSSL library, the external TextSecure messaging service, and several options for the encryption. This was made possible as the IRC network was already using the SSH port on the servers as an encryption port, so the client encrypts the traffic going to and from the IRC network.

CryptoIRC uses the OpenSSL library for encryption, so you need to have the OpenSSL library installed.

What encryption schemes are used?

CryptoIRC is using the TextSecure messaging platform, and a connection with a TextSecure account. TextSecure uses HMAC-SHA512 to generate a key exchange, which then is sent with your connection data to the server. This key exchange is used to encrypt your traffic during the TCP handshake and to decrypt your traffic at the other end.

On the client side there are a few options. Depending on the number of data it is being encrypted, it can either use AES128 or AES256. A detachable (detach mode) version is also available.
