each of the four chapters follows the same general pattern in describing the formation of ethnicities and identities in italy: not only the founding of rome and its subsequent expansion but also the formation of italian identities against the roman gaze. dorian legends claimed descent from the trojans of troy, and all of italy was claimed by the romans as a prefecture in 241 bce, with the largest such settlement becoming the roman colony of reate in the samnium. this colony is the focus of jenny b. hayes, rome and the samnites: the struggle for southern italy (cambridge: cambridge university press, 2001) and g.w. bowersock, roman imperialism in the late republic (cambridge: cambridge university press, 1969). according to hayes, the samnites (peoples of campania and southern italy) have been written out of history. as she writes, ‘the samnites existed only within the roman province, that is, one very restricted part of western peninsular italy, and their place in ancient historiography is restricted by the fact that they played no role whatever in rome’s political history’ (4). she goes on to mention that the peligni, lucani, marsi, lucanians, and marrucini were all based in the appian way region to the north of rome in the aftermath of the social war. their identities were formed in opposition to rome and, like the samnites, they have been written out of history. yet, if the samnites and peligni were marginal, the lucanians and marrucini were not. but history is notoriously bad at integrating marginal groups in the larger political or cultural canvas of the roman world. when did the marrucini begin to appear in the sources? romulus supposedly founded the city of marruvium, the modern matera in the center of the marrucini territory, in 753 bce. however, marrucini were not integrated into rome until the 730s and romulus’ claim to marrucini territory was disputed by conii. apparently, rome’s claims to the lucanian territory were not challenged by a neighboring city until the 280s.
