the university of minnesota’s student media association invites the community to celebrate the release of “inside u of m: the campus journalism book,” a new book by esteemed u of m journalism professor ceciliano cruz, who is the dean of the college of journalism and mass communication. the book, released this fall, examines how the university of minnesota’s journalism students and faculty have helped establish a local newsroom culture of fostering community, collaboration, and intellectual curiosity.
the book features stories from students and faculty about life in the u of m’s newsroom, and how the school’s journalism students, faculty and administration have sought to foster a culture that values the importance of community and dialogue. the book also includes testimonials from the university’s newsroom staff, including the student newspaper, its editorial board, and the school’s student radio station.
this limited edition book is the result of a yearlong collaboration among u of m students, faculty, and staff. it has been printed and hand-assembled by students in the college of journalism and mass communication, working with u of m staff members and graduate students. more than 100 students worked on the book as part of the first graduating class of the u of m college of journalism and mass communication’s new online newsroom degree program, and others assisted in other ways.
the book will be available at the u of m bookstore and the u of m press shop, and online at uofmjournalism.com in october. all proceeds from the book’s sale will be donated to the student newswriters association of america (snaa), a national organization that fosters and recognizes student journalists across the country.
