this isnt just lara being a damsel in distress either. lara is put through a bunch of different circumstances and scenarios in this game, but none of them feel like they are tied to the plot as much as they were in rise of the tomb raider. theres just so much more of a focus on the survival aspect of tomb raider as well, and that might be the best thing about shadow of the tomb raider. what was once the joy of being a tomb raider has been replaced by the grim reality of getting through the day by just surviving it all. nothing feels like it is actually important, not even the story, and that is my biggest issue with shadow of the tomb raider.
the game’s story is set in an alternate 1970s, where lara croft’s father has been murdered by the same people responsible for taking lara’s mother. before his death, lara’s father left her with a single clue: a set of coordinates that lead to a hidden tomb. after her father’s death, lara sets off for the south american jungle to find her mother’s killer and uncover the truth of her parents’ death.
in a strange twist, rise of the tomb raider is set in the same universe as shadow of the tomb raider. that means that any information lara uncovers while investigating her parents’ death will be shared with her older sister, trinity, and, depending on lara’s decisions, will lead her to one of two bad endings.
i was actually looking through shadow of the tomb raider‘s playstation store description when the news broke. only after reading that did it occur to me that it could be the other way around – shadow of the tomb raider could be coming to playstation 4.
