Forming processes have become very important for engineering applications in recent years, in particular. Concurrent with the evolution of forming technology is the increased necessity to .Optical fibers which were originally designed for transmission of light, now have uses in other fields. In particular, fibers which have been designed for the transmission of very high power and/or short wavelength light, such as fibers having a zero dispersion wavelength (ZDW) in the ultraviolet, are finding increasing uses in medical applications.
A typical prior art fiber for medical applications is shown in FIG. 1. The fiber 10 includes a core 12 and a cladding 14. A heater 16 is inserted in the cladding 14 and the inner diameter of the cladding 14 is slightly larger than the diameter of the core 12. The diameter of the cladding 14 is typically between about 0.5 to 1.5.mu.m. This type of configuration is referred to as “flat top” because the lower part of the cladding 14 is wider than the top part of the cladding 14. The cladding 14 is transparent to the light which is intended to be transmitted through the core 12 of the fiber 10. The cladding 14 is typically made of a glass having a refractive index of 1.5 to 1.6.
The heater 16 is inserted in the cladding 14. The heater 16 is used to heat the cladding 14 to raise the temperature of the cladding 14 to a desired elevated temperature. The heater 16 can be coupled to a thermal supply circuit, such as a Peltier module, to control the temperature of the cladding 14. The heater 16 also serves to prevent the cladding 14 from cooling when the light is introduced into the fiber 10.
When the fiber 10 is exposed to light, the light is transmitted through the core 12 of the fiber 10 to an application. A problem with the fiber 10 is that the cladding 14 is inefficient. Because of the relatively large inner diameter of the cladding 14, an appreciable amount of the light which is introduced into the core 12 of the fiber 10 is reflected from the interface between the core 12 and the cladding 14 due to total internal reflection. Since the cladding 14 is transparent to light in the visible range, the problem of reflection from the interface between the core 12 and the cladding 14 is not significant in this range.
