The primary reason I choose this text was because of the price. There are many other texts I could have chosen that are available at lower prices. However, this is a text meant for a very specific audience, and so it is not a bad choice. It is written and produced by people who are really good at teaching anatomy and physiology. The book has gone through many revisions in the writing process, and those who are involved with the process almost certainly have not made the same types of mistakes that I do. I have had to make the book work for me, as I did not have the luxury of time to go over all the chapters and make every change I thought could be made. I think that this is the best priced text of this type, for the purpose of a combined A&P course at an undergraduate level. It is not the most complete anatomical text, but it is the most concise. Since it is not a text for the advanced student, nor for those outside the United States, it is the best choice for a class at the undergraduate level, as it saves both time and money.
Within the text, there are some other topics that I notice are a bit on the technical side of physiology. For example, the text contains a section on muscle physiology (beginning at Chapter 5, Section 18). Rather than a step-by-step review of muscle anatomy and physiology, the section just goes over anatomy of all the muscle fibers in great detail, which is really not a good review for students at this stage in their learning. I also found it a little difficult to find the key points/bullet points of the sections of text. For example, in Section 18, on Muscle Physiology: “Fusiform fibers have the greatest mass……contractile proteins…”, if you don’t understand the word fusiform (from the Greek word fusis meaning “spindle shaped”), it is not apparent to a student. With these two points in mind, I think this textbook needs a new edition to be more appropriate for students.
