geddy lee (singer and bassist) and john rutsey (drums) are the main contributors to r40, a four-disc, forty year anniversary box set of live material from the band. this is the first of three discs, featuring material from the ’70s, while the remaining two discs cover material from the ’80s and ’90s. i was lucky enough to be able to attend the chicago show on november 7, 2002. i had to be in chicago for work, so i caught the train to see the show. i had only listened to rush on the radio before this show, so i was hoping for something different. i was really looking forward to the set list, so i was surprised when i found out it was going to be mostly the same as r30. i was expecting more of the classic songs from the band’s earlier years, but i was pleasantly surprised to find a lot of material from their ’80s and ’90s albums. the show was also quite long for a rush show, lasting almost two and a half hours. the encore was interesting because it was a medley of songs from their three longest running tours; each song from each tour would alternate between the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. the show was quite a bit louder than their typical live shows, as you can hear on r40 and i guess that is due to the fact that it was a “tribute” show. the sound was also rather poor. the bass was especially hard to hear. i would not say that i was disappointed with the show, but i was disappointed that it was a “tribute” show. i would much rather have just seen them do a typical rush show. the set list i think was pretty well chosen, as you can hear a wide variety of songs on this show.
i think the band wanted to prove to fans that they haven’t totally changed their sound over the years. some fans might be disappointed that the songs are so similar to the songs on their albums, but i think that it is good for the band to show their fans that they have not gotten too old to have fun.
