i shot the mannequin in our studio using a tripod to get the best lighting/contrast across all her features. i used the z6’s default settings, except for aperture where i set it to 5.6 and the iso to 250. the camera works well with manual white balance, but there was too much green cast in the eyes, so i adjusted them to neutral. i used the nikon’s exp. comp. and raised the gain (+4 ev) for the highlights and shadows.
the n57h-b (nikon d3300) will be more comfortable to handle, with a tripod provided, versus the z6’s clip-on base and battery grip. a thumb grip on the front and a twist lock switch are provided. an all-purpose control wheel is located on the top. there’s a shutter release button located on the bottom. the af illuminator automatically closes when you use the release button, raising it back up when you close it. the one battery the n57h-b supports is supplied with the camera. the nikon has a memory capacity of up to 2,500 images, though it’s not that clear-cut since some cameras record lower-resolution jpegs when using larger file sizes.
necessity is the mother of photographic invention, as they say, and the lenses available for the full-frame sony rx100 series range from quite modest 28 to 90mm without a zoom. i used the f3.5-5.6 lens to get the shadow detail and some overhanging bushes in the foreground.
the z6’s general color and exposure performance is very good. our exposure performance testing is more along the lines of dynamic range, but the camera is very even and accurate. the color rendering is very good, with excellent detail and accurate color throughout the image. the highlight and shadow clipping, and the exposure falloff are both very well controlled. the saturation is also very good, though color balance is a little bit off due to the color scheme being a bit too warm overall. we do see some issues with white balance in very bright light, but this is more an issue of the color saturation being set too high, rather than the white balance being off. overall, the color rendition is very accurate, and doesn’t suffer from any of the odd color shifts we saw in the z7.
It should be noted that Coyote does not provide any all optical sighting capabilities. The Coyote has a field of view of approximately 60° without modifying the system with a magnifying lens. For proper target alignment it is recommended to use a spotting scope with an illuminated target such as a laser illuminator or red/white light marker. Not all spotting scopes are properly configured for aiming with a laser illuminator or light marker and many require a special optical coating to stop the light from being distorted by the magnification of the lens. Do not attempt to aim the Coyote system and targets with your naked eye. The Coyote system cannot show the user an illuminated red laser spot to aim at and do not function as a self illuminating laser sight. The Coyote design is intended for use by military personnel and law enforcement agencies that operate in daylight or at night and does not provide targeting in all modes or for all situations. The Coyote is an optical experiment and is not meant to be a military weapon nor is it intended to replace the use of a rifle equipped with a laser light on the weapon housing.
