i am not a big fan of trados as a translator, but i have been hired to work for a client that is in the software field.
i have used trados since the early 2000s and i never have much luck with it because of the insane margin the company offers its contractor translators. as far as i can tell, the company gives away the memory dictionary in its base package to all contractors, which makes me view trados with suspicion, as it feels like the company is going after clients by offering them products at a loss.

it is a great tool and is the best in its class, and thus far i have not seen anything outmatching it. for anyone with the budget that can afford its sky-high monthly subscription, it is well worth the money and has all the features and extras that make it stand out from the competition. while i say “stand out”, i mean to acknowledge that it is not the next-best thing, but it would be the best, but it is not there yet. anyone who has not tried it is truly missing out. also, it is constantly being improved and enhanced by the company, which makes it even more worth the money.

i have to agree with tim griffiths , his slides are very in-sightful. i just do not see the advantages of using a software that uses closed formats and is not interoperable. the fact that so many publications and huge projects use trados is not a good argument. for example i have seen projects like the ifp – institute of physics of portugal or the r&pw institute of physics with millions of words of their documents (acronyms) and i would have to learn the “proper” way to use it (read: what the manual says to do) and i will just end up burning time they could have been doing other things.

sdl trados has impressive documentation, but i found it fairly superficial, and i had to do a lot of tweaking to get some of the texts correct. i would not encourage a translator to use a vendor program that does not use an open source, open standard, and compatible framework, even though it may cost a bit more. it makes the work, and your output, much more expensive. sdl trados 7 adds some nice enhancements such as word synonyms in the control panel, which certainly will make the life of translators much easier, but it is still in beta, and i would not recommend it until its stable. since it does not integrate well with other programs, i would not recommend sdl trados 7 unless you are a very serious user of trados. i tried sdl trados again and found it lacking in many ways. currently, sdl trados is not supported by intersource and is obviously not supporting the new trados 7, so i would not recommend trados 7 unless you know your customers will approve a license change to an older version. it is possible to use sdl trados for one job only, but many are involving multiple languages. i do not like this, it is far better for the translator to work in the style they are used to. i have used trados successfully for years for freelance, although this was mainly the web and perhaps pdf translation. i like to use the styles editor for web translation. i never used trados for campaign translation. for that, deja vu had all the tools to make the task simple. and yes, i will not recommend sdl trados for campaign translation unless i am paid twice. 5ec8ef588b
