prolific usb to serial pro drivers are the latest generation of this classic usb to serial bridge product. they are also fully backwards-compatible, they just cannot be recognised without using a specific detection script (one of the advantages of them being backwards-compatible is that they still work on older distributions). so now, if the prolific drivers werent bad, this could be taken as an officially supported and documented aten usb to serial bridge driver.

Prolific Tech Support informed me they are aware of the issue, and they are not able to do anything about it. I also contacted the user in the forum that is using the 3rd party chip and their ATEN vendor ID is a match. Their ATEN product ID is a match, too, and it is a 3rd party device. The manufacturer is important to this device so there is no need to continue the discussion as long as their product ID is unique. When the third party vendor sells their own product, they may use the vendor and product ID of the original chip maker. So, I cant tell if these two different third party adapters are running the original chipset or a completely different chip. If the vendor is using a similar chip, they should use the original manufacturer’s device ID. Prolific Tech Support informed me that there is an ISA version of this chipset that supports Lion, so if that is the case, there is hope for me. In the past, Prolific has provided drivers for ISA based devices, and they have provided an updated driver for Windows 7 but not for Lion. Unfortunately, it still has not been updated, so even though the Linux kernel has support for ISA devices, if you only had Lion that means you could not use the Prolific driver. 5ec8ef588b
