the nodemcu flash file system may need to be reformatted, particularly if its address has changed because the new firmware is different in size from the old firmware. if it is not automatically formatted then it should be valid and have the same contents as before the flash operation. you can still run file.format() manually to re-format your flash file system. you will know if you need to do this if your flash files exist but seem empty, or if data cannot be written to new files.

in order to update nodemcu/esp8266/esp32 firmware, this file has to be loaded into the flash memory. from the current flash memory position, you can copy the firmware to flash memory by copying the firmware to 0x00000-0x7ffff range and using a bin/0x00000.bin to bin/0x10000.bin (as described above).
you can get these files by using the bin/ device of dd-wrt on a windows computer. select the correct firmware version (e.g. bin/0x1000.bin), and then copy the files to the correct memory offset (0x00000-0x7ffff for the esp32 and 0x00000-0x0b000 for the esp8266).
this is only available on routers that already have dd-wrt installed and telnet/ssh enabled. it is the *only* recommended method to upgrade the router wirelessly because the file is transferred from the dd-wrt servers to the router and the checksum is verified to ensure that the file is not corrupt. other flashing methods transfer the file from your pc to the router (which would go over the wireless which is not as reliable) and do nothing to verify that the file is not corrupted.
i used the update firmware in the past using the online (i.e. login updater program) and it failed on updating. being in it,i believed something happened on the download side, not a complete packet download, not a line 6 issue. so i dl’ed the flash file from that point on and used offline update for 2 years. and always had success.
one of the other problems i’ve run into was that it was not possible to install or even update the firmware from the line 6 updater on my computer. that was because line 6 updater was only for use on your phone. in order to update the firmware, you have to flash the update file from your computer to your phone. i’ve seen that mentioned on many forums, but i could never get it to work. i would like to see line 6 updater updated so it is compatible with both your phone and your computer.
