Hoosier Girls Athletic Association. She also competed in the shot put, discus, and javelin events. She twice won the State 4A girls javelin throw championship and also won the State High School Meet in the shot put, discus, and javelin. She later achieved All-America honors in shot put at the AAU National Meet in New York City.

She was very proud of her family. They had made a home for themselves in St. Petersburg since the 1960s and they had been supportive of her commitment to education. She had family and friends in Kansas City, St. Louis, and throughout St. Petersburg. She spent hours at her parents home working on her computer and was the proud owner of over 100 CDs, downloaded from the Internet or purchased locally.

Kimmy also loved the out-of-doors, specifically camping and fishing. After her husband retired from the Navy, he and Kimmy purchased a cabin in Northern Illinois and spent many hours camping, fishing, and hiking.

She was born March 25, 1915, in Dubuque, IA the daughter of Walter and Ellen (Meyer) Schaumburg. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1934, and attended Meadowlark Business College. At the age of forty, she began working at Schlitz Brewing Company and retired in 1981. Before retiring, she was a member of the old ladies group at the Classic Theater. After retiring, her greatest passion and enthusiasm was the Schlitz Theater. She was an avid bridge player and color guard member of the Dubuque High School Band. She loved to go to the Schlitz Theater in Galena, where she was known as the lady in the green apple hat.

A very intense student and “straight-A” student, Kimmy had the highest test scores in her class. She was the class teacher’s dream student and a bit of an airhead, but, as the author says, no matter how smart you are, you can learn a lot about other people by how they interact with you. Kimmy was a very kind-hearted girl and was close with her younger brother, Jake, and her little brother, Rob. She also was good friends with former teacher, Ms. Handford. Kimmy’s parents had been divorced for a long time, and for the first time in her life, Kimmy would make all of her own decisions, especially those involving spending her own money.
Kimmy’s best friends were always her sister, Jenna, and her brother’s best friend, Jake. She was very close to her big brother, Rob, and was the one who had to sit with him at the movies. Kimmy loved her brother’s roommate, Terry, who was her closest friend in St. Petersburg. At first, she had trouble getting along with the girls in her hall at school, but she soon got used to it. Kimmy and her little brother, Rob, moved out of their home when he was fifteen years old and started a new life in St. Petersburg with their grandma. Kimmy also went on to a new school, and new friends. She kept up with Jake after he moved to California and became an aspiring singer.
Jake was the first person to ask if Kimmy was okay and check on her after she broke her wrist. They became the closest of friends and their dynamic was that of twins: one of them had to watch the other be let down or cry. After his best friend’s death, Jake moved to California with his new girlfriend, Angie, and moved into her apartment. Before, Jake had been very private and had never had many friends. However, in school, he became very popular and he met friends that he had made there. He was a brilliant student and was voted “Most Likely To Succeed”. Also, he had a great sense of humor and was a good singer.
