the theater has the shape of a theater sphere, which allows the center to be used for multiple functions. at the center of the sphere is a large, covered venue, where audience members can watch performances or exhibit exhibits. this may also be a technical production or rehearsal space. the outer regions of the sphere can be converted into purpose-built exhibition or classroom spaces, allowing the center of the facility to be reclaimed for performance.

as the renovation was intended to offer best value for money to the educational establishment, several requirements led to the decision to use in-house staff and materials from a local building supplies store. as part of the building renovation, the old switchboard was removed in favor of an epb (electronic performance board) installation. this allowed the installation of five digitally operated chandeliers in the ceiling, one for each of the five leg supports.

eight robotic arms served as the operators for the epb lights. an electronically controlled stage level control system was used, allowing the epb lights to follow the actions of the performers on stage, while providing the correct lighting levels and colors.

designing for exceptional levels of flexibility, performance, and lighting in a space that may be modified is technically challenging. graphisoft archicad, together with mep simulations, helped to make sure that adequate lighting was achieved throughout the life of the facility.

design and documentation: the mep engineer was responsible for the load calculation for the support legs and the archicad model that was created as a part of the mep modeling process was used for coordinating the routing of electrical ducting. the mep engineer also used graphisoft archicad to create the piping and ductwork layout.

the daejeon municipal library is located in the center of daejeon, south korea. a new library building is scheduled to be constructed in 2011. the existing library building will be renovated and the new library building will be constructed in the same place.
