The most emotional moment of the film comes during the obligatory emotionally-charged final showdown, during which Farrell and Gabriel ‘discover’ each other by the terminally injured McClane and his partner from the original film, Holly (Bonnie Bedelia). The emotional power of their reunion is not quite what it might have been in the first’Die Hard,’ but it’s still quite effective.
In action, ‘Live Free or Die Hard’ is typical Willis, but after 20 years and several sequels, McClane is more than just a one-liner and a gun, which were his only character defining features in the first film. Although there are a few moments, like the one in the airport involving some random baggage handlers with a gun, that are silly, everything else is handled with great understanding and respect.
Director John Moore, who directed the two’Die Hard 2’movies, feels like he was caught up in the ever-expanding ‘Die Hard’ universe, with a few wild moments, but mostly a jolly good time. There are a few whoppers, including a scene in which McClane is somehow able to fire a handgun through a grating in a reinforced window (as if you didn’t realize that was one of the bullet-proofing elements of a skyscraper). But the real gem of the film is the amusing relationship that develops between McClane and Farrell, as well as Olyphant’s Simon Phoenix, who initially kidnaps Farrell.
Moore doesn’t try to do too much, and lets the action do the heavy lifting (and what action it is, it’s pretty great), leaving the dialogue as a joke. Moore also seems to have been playing up the nostalgia factor, in the sense that almost the entire film takes place in a post-9/11 America, with everyone wearing name tags on their jackets to explain where they’re from, and almost all of them saying things like, “You took out the whole building.” Considering that ‘Die Hard 4’ falls right on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks, it’s something of a coded comment on what’s happened to American society in the past two decades.
