the tactics of bad north are fairly straightforward, and the lack of a traditional tutorial system helps. a basic understanding of the game is required, but it certainly isn’t required to enjoy the game. i never had a problem just mashing the keys and doing what i was supposed to do. however, you will want to pay attention to enemy units and also where your units are placed. the game has a nice pace, and it is easy to see what you are supposed to do.

if you look closely, you can see the game is quite similar to travian in terms of gameplay. you have to think ahead and plan your moves. since you never know what your enemies are going to do, you have to be very prepared. bad north is a fast paced game that requires you to think quick on your feet. there are no classes, so you have to choose from a group of four different troop types: archer, crossbowman, pikeman and warrior. your troops are assigned to your class upon creation and cannot be changed.

if you enjoy playing in clans or teams, then bad north is the perfect game for you. you can play online with other players to attack each other, and you can also take part in events that provide additional rewards and bonuses. the amount of terrain you can control is limited, and you cannot attack your own territory. you can use your resources (gold, food and wood) to build buildings that will help you manage your troops.

the system requirements are simple: bad north will run on most anything with a computer and an internet connection. you’ll need windows xp sp3 or higher, and an nvidia gpu with cuda support, such as a geforce 350 or better. to run the game on an intel-based mac, you’ll need to install the cuda toolkit for os x and then follow the installation instructions.

bad north is less a game about being a viking hero, and more about being a viking hero fighting a small army of vikings. what makes the game special is how well it embodies that balance of systems and player agency. i wanted to kill things, and the game was happy to let me do that, and very rarely did i feel like i was hindered by a system i didn’t understand. sometimes, the system would do something that pushed me out of my comfort zone, but the game always made it clear what to do, and how to do it. that is rare in games these days, and it feels like a win.
even if there are some rough edges, bad north is a special game. you can come up with a number of ways to kill your opponent, but there are so many possible responses to your opponent’s moves that youll never feel like youre fighting the system. it is a work of such stunning simplicity that it should be held up as an example for all the industry struggles with making games which are easy to pick up and play, yet offer longevity. a game like bad north, where a victory is a simple matter of time and attrition, should be a warning to the games industry, to make games that allow us to feel powerful without being overwhelmed by the complexity of the systems at play.
theres always a catch. sure, bad north is a great little game, but its a great little game with a few imperfections. but if youre desperate for a new handheld experience and dont mind getting rid of your switch, then theres no reason to hesitate. pc is a platform that should be on everyone’s radar.
i have been able to play bad north on pc and xbox one. load times for switch are comparatively longer compared to these versions. but a sacrifice i was whiling to bear to play in handheld mode. i didnt come across any glitches or issues with how the game ran on my playthroughs. what i did admire is there is a very helpful support page on the developers website should you encounter any issues here . showing excellent support for their customers. you can also learn a little about the developers here also.
