That was the final piece of the puzzle, a build step to run the script. Initially I just chose the first server in the connection string as the target database, but in a next step I figured out the SQL profile and could dynamically target the required DBs. This was quite nice and the SQL Profile UI is surprisingly simple to use.

For all of you that were sitting there thinking to yourselves “Heh. Big whoop. If its only made up of a couple of tables then theres no real need for a data sync” – well, I strongly urge you to please sit down, because if youd said that I bet youd have been able to list some of the world’s biggest tables of your business that still dont get synced to development environments. Theres no hard and fast rule, but two things I have observed that might be applicable:

Number 2 is that the tables themselves may have extra fields added for some unforeseen reason. These extra fields can lock out the migration of data between environments. In these cases, you might have some issues migrating data and lose something in the gap.

Ive been working with Red Gate up in Toronto for a couple of years now and the team has consistently impressed me with their quick learning curve ( I helped to architect a much larger sync project with them ). We’ve now developed a strong partnership that extends beyond the product itself and into my own tools as well. There’s a number of things that I like about this one – the UI is actually reasonably intuitive, just like any other diff tool you have used before, you can use it both as a clone and a diff tool ( the interface differs from those of VS 2015 ), there are a large number of operators available, it can create both concurrent and sequential merges, it’s relatively easy to script and automated, and its integrated into TeamCity quite well. It’s not perfect though. For instance, it has a bad habit of leaving behind executables/scripts after a data sync.

If you try to activate a Red Gate Customer Tool on a machine running a very old version of a Red Gate tool then you will get the message All of the entitlements for this serial number have already been claimed and you will need to log into your customer portal and issue a new activation.
If you are using Red Gate tools then it is extremely important that you log in to your customer portal with your Red Gate ID. If you have forgotten your password you can use the reset link in your customer portal. If you are logged in as someone else you will be sent a message advising you of the problem and you will need to check your access logs to see if you have been logged in as someone else.
Here’s where some of the magic happens. When you ask Red Gate to transfer a license to a machine that is not logged into your portal via the customer portal, Red Gate will issue a new activation automatically. They will then send a push notification to your phone.
This is why it is crucial that you login to your portal with your Red Gate ID. You need to login to your portal to request a new activation, which is the only way for you to see the new email and click the notification in it.
On the following page you will be asked to input a serial number for the activation. This must be a serial number that has never been used and it is highly recommended that you add a counter to the serial number to avoid errors.
If you enter a serial number that has been used you will get a message saying that the licence has already been activated. What you must do next is to confirm that the serial number you entered matches what is displayed in the email. If it does then you can use the same serial number to activate the licence on other machines by simply adding a counter to the serial number.
