Gwen was very good in the original movie, so its a plus to see the screenwriter try to amp up the romantic chemistry in a The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ; but the focus is always on whats going on around Peter: that’s where the story really belongs, especially when considering its somewhat buried origins in comics. The film is never as creatively taut as Spider-Man 2. And it also has a few problems of its own, not least the tendency to try to cram in just too much info (especially at the opening credits). And then there’s that truly outrageous final act sequence that builds up everything weve seen before hand, but explodes itself into a ridiculously unrealistic amalgam of superhuman and pop-cultural vernacular.

The Battle scenes are the best part of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 thanks to action director Shane Black, who along with screenwriter Alex Kurtzman, wrote the screenplay for the original Die Hard movie. The fight sequences are fast paced and have a lot of energy, despite the fact that they are resolved rather simply. They also look great, with some nice camera tricks, elaborate stunts, and locations. The problem is that they dont feel like movie fight scenes. Theyre more like stage production fight sequences: lots of choreography, flashy swords and wands, and no interaction with the surroundings. Even the fights with Electro are just eye candy.

As far as the CG-enhanced/man-in-a-suit product goes, this sequel brings all of the things that made the last Spider-Man film an exhilarating experience. I felt like I was really swinging through the city on Spidey’s web-glider, and the stunts were often incredibly complex and inventive. And the occasional digital effects–like when Peter interacts with a building or leans against a wall–were extremely well integrated. The suit also looks quite convincing: the web-shooters are easily controlled, the treads make sense, and the face mask looks like it wouldnt come off even if Peter was being shot at. And the effects in the various fight sequences are very well done.
