redmaelstrom has a pretty good description of the differences between his old and new ppsspp, and it’s pretty good. he also says that the new one has no issues with script compilation but the old version is definitely better.
i’ve been using omegad as my gen 4 editing program. it’s stable and has a pretty good selection of features. i have no experience with any of these other tools. personally i prefer using ppsspp over these guys because i know what i’m doing and i like it better.
known issues: scripts won’t compile on v2.0 and later. you can work around this by editing your scripts in dsp files or using the old ppsspp. scripthg is the most reliable, but it has a lot of bugs. ppsspp is a bit better but still doesn’t work 100% of the time.
i’ve been using the hackmii to hack gen 4. it’s a little buggy but mostly works. it has a lot of glitches but all of them are pretty easy to fix. there are some pre-existing hacks for pokemon on hm and all of them have some kind of a glitch where it goes on a loop or some sort of glitch during battle. when i had my gba and couldn’t get the older version to work i used to use the hackmii but now that i have a dsi i’m using it again. it’s really hard to get working because the game is always asking for a region file, but you can create one with a hex editor and then load that in the hackmii. that’s my workaround. it’s been working pretty well and it’s a really good tool to have around.
this is a good editor that allows you to look at the assets in a rom and change them. it’s great for texturing and editing, but i don’t really know what the few features it has. i used it to texturize all the trainers and then add some glitches and backsprites from the gcn games. there’s nothing special that i’ve seen in it.
