History

AutoCAD is a single-user CAD (computer-aided design) application that was developed in the early 1980s by Seymour Simons, a former employee at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), and Paul Pedzwicki. After they left DEC in 1980, they started a company named Computer Design Corporation (CDC), which was originally intended to provide systems to other CAD vendors. With the help of a few programmers, they put together the first release of AutoCAD on a computer with a graphics card and sold it to a single customer.

In 1982, CDC released AutoCAD, which was first marketed to AutoCAD owners for use with their already existing CAD data. At the time, most CAD companies used mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal. AutoCAD was initially offered as a desktop app running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. With the advent of the personal computer, CAD users could now work at home.

At the same time that AutoCAD was introduced, former CDC employee Dave Cramer developed a virtual drafting board in a personal computer called Micro-Frame. The first version of the Micro-Frame software, which was only available for the Apple II, cost $299.[2] Soon after, Micro-Frame became the company Autodesk and Cramer became Autodesk’s first employee.
