In the early days, AutoCAD did not have an entirely graphical user interface (GUI), although the first AutoCAD could export files to EZD and later Adobe Draw. In 1983, the company introduced a print driver that allowed print to be sent directly to an HP plotter without the use of Postscript. PostScript was a page description language (PDL) initially developed by Adobe Systems for the output of their laser printer and plotter products. A decade later, AutoCAD would continue to utilize Postscript for graphical output but in other applications. In 1989, AutoCAD was bundled with a new PDL called PDF, which is a standard for electronic document distribution. AutoCAD’s PDF driver allowed users to send native, as opposed to Postscript, output to devices such as plotters and printers. Around 1990, as PDLs, or “page description languages,” evolved, the use of graphics drivers began to decrease as Postscript (and other PDLs) became the default choice. Although AutoCAD can still output Postscript, it is only for graphical output.

From the very beginning, AutoCAD had basic command panels and a variety of command menus. The command panels were always readily available and the menus accessed by either clicking on a button, pressing a key, or a combination of the two (see figure 1).

Another feature of AutoCAD, and most other commercial CAD programs at the time, was that it ran on the Microsoft Windows operating system, which at that time had no graphics capabilities built into its basic structure. AutoCAD, and the rest of the CAD industry, eventually moved to operating systems such as DOS, OS/2, and Windows NT that included built-in support for graphics and vector graphics. Windows 95 and Windows 98, which first appeared in 1995 and 1998, respectively, were the first OSs to have more graphics support than previous versions, including hardware acceleration of 2D and 3D graphics.

AutoCAD originated in 1982 as AutoCAD PRO for MicroStation, an early CAD system based on the GE Visiplan and licensed by GE’s Benicia Computer Group. It was first made available in 1983 as a “privately developed system”. It was created by Mike Kurtz at the Fairfield, CT, office of Kurtz and Kurtz, a small CAD software firm owned by Mike and his brother Ralph Kurtz. Kurtz had previously developed a line drawing system called VISIWORKS. His company got its start with the software purchase of GE’s MicroStation application in 1981. For the company’s first seven years, it sold versions of the system only to other Autodesk customers.

In late 1985, Autodesk bought Kurtz and Kurtz and made it a wholly owned subsidiary. In February 1989, Autodesk released the first version of AutoCAD. Open the menu and select New from the menu > Standard from the menu, then New CAD Project.

Enter a name for the project.

From the menu select Preferences, then Devices and select a device.

Choose a display resolution from the list.

From the Clipboard menu choose Select All from the menu, then press the Enter key.

Drag the selection tool from the top right corner of the Canvas to the right side of the desk.

Click the Copy button.

Paste the selection into the Desk.

Click on the Placement menu and select Position from the menu, then from the Position dialog select top left corner.

Click on the Alignment menu and select Align from the menu.

Click on the Align dialog box and select Top Left Corner from the list.

Click on the Align dialog box and select Upper Left Corner from the list.

Click on the Close button.

Click on the View menu and select Zoom from the menu.

Click on the Zoom menu and select 100 % from the list.

Click on the OK button.
