CRASH: A British Airways pilot has been lauded for showing extraordinary courage in rescuing a group of pleasure boaters after they were downed by a wave

Aviation expert John Jackson of John Jackson Aviation Consultants Limited said the BBC report was exceptional because it showed that a pilot can recognise the importance of saving lives.
He said: “These statistics are all tragic, but they serve to emphasise one of the highest aims of any commercial airline pilot – ensuring that lives are not lost whilst they are in the air.
“Once a flight has taken off it has a certain period of safety, but a series of incidents have shown that the conditions on the ground can be very dangerous for those on the flight.
“Though they can be deadly at the height of the wave, search and rescue teams can be hugely effective at the surface and this was the reason that even in the UK, with the best trained rescue services, some people are lost overboard.
“Last year we had an amazing pilot who helped to save two people after they came up over the aircraft and dropped into the ocean during a ferry flight. He contacted those on a nearby beach and they were able to reach both people stranded in the choppy water.”
Jackson added that aviation now saw water rescue as a priority – with training for pilots, cabin crew and stewardesses to discover and access the shoreline and learn best places to reach a person who has fallen off.
“The vast majority of incidents occur at sea and are very dangerous and few accidents to people occur before they get to the very sea,” he said.
He added: “To reach the people in difficulty, the pilots often have to descend below the deck of the ship to launch their aircraft. Though there is plenty of support for the flight crew, they must be prepared for the unexpected.
“I feel for the unfortunate people who are caught up in the incident, but I salute the bravery of the pilots.”
Tributes to the injured pleasure boat crew which launched a tragic sport fishing trip to land on the wrong beach.
Martyn Gilroy was the helicopter pilot who was among the last to see the hapless group off and witnessed their horrific tragedy.
