Old cards, new rules. Old school with a twist. Over 450 years ago, France colonized many countries, Great Britain acquired lands, and even the map of the New World was sealed. Over 100 years later, nations are in a state of ruin, while the world is being controlled by the forces of evil. Now, a new generation is about to inherit the cards and the role. It was with certain alacrity that I completed the playthrough of the early game on Normal difficulty (there is simply no other option). I had already noted that the difficulty ramping at the very end of the game might be a real sticking point. This was my worst case scenario: I was feeling that if I failed this playthrough I would be in for a long slog of playing on easy without anything to strive for. Fortunately, this was not the case. I ended up fighting heroes, rescuing kids, killing front line minions, and destroying Evils. This means that I was helping, for a change, and that the game really does allow for a bit of player freedom. There are a number of sequences where there is a way to engage in combat or perform other actions without actually touching a minion. The main issue, however, is that there was a lot of rule compression occurring in order to speed the game along. At the end of the game, I was presented with a self-assessment: do I want to continue on Normal difficulty, or do I want to choose a new difficulty? Back in my days, I would have laughed off such a decision. I didn’t care about having more challenges for the game to offer. It was hard enough for me as a player to get through the game. My enjoyment of playing would only be enhanced by subsequent playthroughs. Today, it is my pleasure to advise that only a fool would take the choice to increase difficulty level. When I was younger, I thought that I was a seasoned gamer because I had lost the will to lose. I could not face defeat, and I probably had no real goals at all. I am happy to report that today I am a more giving person. I have goals and I like to reach them. I don’t like to fail. I don’t like to lose.
