Introduction
If you’re going to pick up and play any game that’s born out of a Kickstarter project, it behooves you to be ready for the fact that whatever you play is probably not what that project’s backers were expecting. That might be good news or bad news, depending upon which project you’re talking about. Perhaps, in all those months of waiting and collecting pledges, you’ve invested a lot of time and money into the game you’re about to buy, and it’s your only chance to play the game you’ve preordered. Perhaps, if you’re not wholly impressed with what’s being shown off, you’ve been lured into such a purchase by the tantalizing presence of an upcoming sequel. In either case, if you’re planning to play the game you’ve bought and are disappointed, we’re only here to help.
The RPG industry has its share of “kickstarter mentality” games, but on the whole, it’s pretty good at hiding the ugliness of it from its audience. Think about it: The first-draft of an RPG is almost always less polished and complete than its final version (especially if you compare it to the game’s creators’ vision as opposed to the game they promised). However, Kickstarter projects have also failed to deliver quite a lot—I myself consider the very successful sequel to Neverwinter Nights, City of Heroes, an unfortunate example of a game I’d hope never to see again.
I can’t say the same of Transcendence‘s Elden Ring.
The most common complaint about it might be that it’s not quite a full RPG—and I’m going to attempt to explain why that’s an entirely valid complaint. It’s clear that the developers attempted to cram the entire RPG experience into a single experience, and I think this was what they were aiming for, so we’re not necessarily going to be talking about a failed Kickstarter experiment.
But let’s start with the idea that this is in fact an RPG, even if it’s clearly focused on a single, central character. If that’s your personal definition of an RPG, then no
