The Classic Approach to Editing

The classic approach to image editing is to work with layers and layers of images and colors. You work with the “history” of the work you did on the image. And, unlike the Windows-based apps discussed in the next section, you don’t get a layered view of the program where you can see where the changes you’ve made are. You see the changes you made in real time as you make them, as shown in the following steps:

1. **Open your image.**

2. **Create a new layer.**

To create a new layer, click the New Layer button on the Layers panel. As shown in Figure 4-1, a new layer is created on the left side of the panel, below the Background layer. When you click the New Layer button, the Layers panel appears as shown in Figure 4-2.

3. **Using the Lasso tool, drag across an object of interest and then click the New Layer button again.**

4. **Drag the new layer below the Background layer on the Layers panel.**

The new layer is placed above the Background layer by default.

5. **In the Layer menu, choose Layer⇒Layer Mask⇒Enable Layer Mask.**

When you use the Layer Mask feature, you create layers on top of your image, but you don’t see them. You see only the final image. When you create a layer mask, you see the image that you edited _inside_ the layer mask.

6. **Create a layer mask for the new layer using the Brush tool (see Chapter 5

Elements is a reliable, sometimes overwhelming, but highly user-friendly photo editor, especially for people who already know their way around a digital camera but haven’t had the time, or money, to invest in a more advanced program.

Important Photoshop features

It is of utmost importance to have a basic knowledge of Photoshop if you want to edit digital photos as well as other image files. If you have not used Photoshop before you will probably find Elements a fairly intuitive program.

As a rule, Photoshop is good at any photo editing job: remove red eye, repair blurry photos, retouch people’s faces, add a background, and so on.

Adobe Photoshop has separate tools for painting on photos. It has a painting brush, a paint bucket, a smoother, a fattener, and a spray can. A brush is the best tool for doing detailed work with fine detail, the bucket is good for quick general work, the smoother gives a little glow to your work, and the spray can is good for anything quickly. You can also use the eraser.

Spreads, brushes, and other tools

Adobe Photoshop’s spreads and brushes are the basic tools for the photographer’s toolbox. Spreads are grids for creating an image with similar colors. The Photoshop brushes are much like the painting tools but work on any color of the photo. You can also use free brushes from the Internet.

Photoshop has only a few tools for editing:

You can add shadows, highlights, and midtones.

You can create seamless backgrounds and add layers with sounds, masks, and text.

You can add text, and draw on photos and fill them.

You can add special effects such as gradient and vignette.

You can make black-and-white and color photo effects.

You can sharpen and darken images.

You can blur, darken, and sharpen parts of a photo.

You can sharpen and darken a picture while using a brush.

You can do layer effects, adjust filter effects, and apply filters to photo layers.
