In this book, I use the term “photoshop” when I’m referring to the Photoshop digital imaging software. I use the term “photography” when I am referring to the physical process of taking photos.

Understanding the Photoshop editing system

The Photoshop editing system is layer based. Editing is done by selecting one or more layers or by creating new layers and then filling them with one or more of the effects or tools available. You can add text, logos, graphics, or images to those layers. A major benefit to this layered editing system is the ability to redo edits and undo changes.

Understanding layers

When you open a Photoshop document, all the layers are visible. You can create and edit multiple layers. You can select any layer or combination of layers and move, resize, and delete those layers. A layer is like a box that contains multiple types of information. It doesn’t define the look of the image. It’s merely a grouping device for groups of layers.

You can create a new layer by choosing Create a New Layer from the Layers panel’s Layer menu. You can also create a new layer by pressing Ctrl+Backspace/Shift+Ctrl+Backspace on the keyboard.

To hide a layer, make sure it’s selected and choose the View menu and then Hide layer. Choose Back from the View menu to reveal the hidden layers.

The layer system also enables you to duplicate and hide or show individual layers. To duplicate a layer, press Ctrl+J/ ⌘-J on the keyboard. You can hide all the layers in the document at once by pressing Ctrl+J/ ⌘-J. To show a layer that’s hidden, press the same keyboard shortcut.

To edit a layer, select the layer and click the Edit menu and then Edit Layer. The Edit Layer dialog box opens. This dialog box enables you to rename or change the layer’s color, contrast, saturation, and so on. You can also change the type of layer to a new type and add other effects, such as shadows or a bevel.

To create a new layer, choose Layer⇒New Layer. You can also create a new layer by pressing the Ctrl+N/Shift+N on the keyboard. You may also notice that the New Layer dialog box appears under the Layers panel after you create a new layer. You can name the layer any way that you want, but it is suggested that you keep the default

This article focuses on learning Photoshop basics, starting from Windows version.

The macOS version has a similar set of features, although it tends to have fewer features than Windows version.

1. How do you save a file?

There are several ways to save a file.

Using File > Save As, choosing File type > Web Page (.html).

Open Explorer or finder and click on the folder that contains the image that you want to save. The easiest way is to find a folder that contains an image you want to save. Alternatively, you can open an image in Photoshop Elements, right-click on it and click ‘Save as’

Using the File > Export command (Mac) or File > Save Image As > Export (Windows), choosing file type > Web Page (.html)

You can also save an image in vector format to preserve the original file size. Please refer to this article on how to convert an image into vector format. If you save a vector image as a PNG, it will have a very large file size and slow your computer to a crawl.

After you’ve made edits to the image, it is necessary to save the changes you made in order to revert back to the original.

2. Pre-Exposure

Pre-exposure is the time that the camera is taking a photo. You can increase the pre-exposure from the shutter speed or f-stop.

To increase the pre-exposure, use the key-combo Shift+Ctrl+A

To decrease the pre-exposure, use the key-combo Shift+Ctrl+Z.

Try using different shutter speeds to see what gives you the best exposure

3. Adjust the Color

In the image below, I see that the colors of the banana are over-exposed.

To check the Exposure:

• Open the file in Photoshop Elements and take a look at the Histogram

• Click on the fill bar on the Histogram, it should be around the middle on a chart that looks like this (follow the arrows)

• If the boxes along the Histogram are mostly on the right, you need to reduce the Exposure in Photoshop Elements

The Content-Aware Fill allows you to select an area within an image and automatically apply a correction to it to remove unwanted objects.
The Dodge & Burn tool can be used to remove details from an image, or to add highlights to brighten up an image.
The Eraser is one of the most used tools in Photoshop. It can be used to erase unwanted objects from an image or even to correct exposure.
