* There are also many image-editing programs for Windows and Linux called GIMP, which is less expensive than Photoshop and offers a lot of features.
* Photoshop Express is a recently added feature available for the iPad in the App Store. It’s a powerful image-editing platform for both beginners and pros.

## Convert to Grayscale

Grayscale pictures with black-and-white shades are the foundation of a lot of great photo effects, so converting to grayscale and back to color can change the look of your images in important ways. The grayscale feature you use depends on how you want your finished product to look.

You can apply a grayscale effect for a few reasons:

* It saves a lot of time (if you plan to do an extensive manipulation to a picture).
* It can help to increase the quality of your images.
* It’s a great tool to test before you really get started with photo compositing, so you know if the effect will work.
* If you’re interested in painting on an image, it’s worth doing a few iterations on a grayscale image before you try it on color.

The best way to do a grayscale conversion is with the Image>Adjustments>Levels command. This command converts the color to grayscale (see Figure 8-6).

You can convert from black-and-white to color by using the levels tool. This command lets you increase the lightness of the shadows and decrease the lightness of the highlights. You get more control when you pick a color from the color wheel to use as a point of reference to shade or lighten areas.

The Shadows, Midtones, and Highlights options work just like Levels does, except that you use the same slider for each color (see Figure 8-7).

There are several things that separate Photoshop from its competitors such as Paint Shop Pro.

We will discuss a few of them here.

Clipping paths

The first feature we are going to discuss is clipping paths. Clipping paths are a powerful and relatively new feature that can be used for creating and editing images. Although digital imaging courses will teach you how to do most of the basic editing techniques, they probably won’t teach you about clipping paths.

That’s why Photoshop is such a preferred option to create and manipulate images.

A clipping path is a path that determines where the content of your image will be displayed. For example, if the image is a tree, you can choose a branch or a trunk, not just the leaves.

When you have a clipping path that helps you determine what part of the image is transparent and what part is opaque, Photoshop will be able to create the object out of transparent parts of the image, while on the other hand, the layer will show only the area of the image that is affected by the clipping path.

Without clipping paths you need to manually cut out the parts you want to keep.

How to create a clipping path

The best way to create a clipping path is to use the Polygonal Lasso tool.

With the lasso tool you have the possibility to draw a freehand path, if you have a precise idea of where you want to cut.

If you want to create a perfect clipping path, you should use the Polygonal Lasso tool, if you want to create a rough clipping path you can use the Brush Tool and Paths tool.

The Polygonal Lasso tool

1. Select the Polygonal Lasso tool and draw freehand or select the appropriate brush as per your needs.

2. Click with the left mouse button to release the lasso and press the right mouse button to drag it. You can hold down the L key on the keyboard to make the lasso larger.

3. When your lasso is complete, you can use the Tools options to delete unnecessary parts or double-click to delete them.

The Polygonal Lasso tool has many useful functions.

Liturgical Music is a series of three three-hour video tutorials to help people learn how to sing liturgical chants in Latin, English, and other languages. The videos cover both simple and difficult parts of the chant (such as the cantus firmus), demonstrating the appropriate way to breathe, sing, and mensuralize the chant. The series was released as three separate tutorial videos on DVD: “Latin Chant”, “English Chant”, and “Cantiones Sacrae Chant”.

The videos include additional information about the liturgical texts, the history of chant, explanations of the choral clef, and modern performances of the chant. Each of the three series of tutorials has its own title, but they share some of the same cast and scriptwriters.
